Patent Agent & Trade Marks Agent Examinations 2027 — A Guide for AP & Telangana Candidates
Patent Agent & Trade Marks Agent Examinations 2027

The Government of India is conducting the Patent Agent Examination 2027 and the Trade Marks Agent Examination 2027. These examinations provide an excellent opportunity to enter the specialised and rapidly growing field of Intellectual Property Rights.

If you are a graduate from Andhra Pradesh or Telangana, this post is written specifically keeping you in mind — the eligibility, the practical considerations around examination centres and viva voce, the career potential, and what you should do right now.

Applications are open. The last date to apply is 30 September 2026 at 11:59 PM. The Government has clearly stated that this deadline will not be extended.

Note: This guide has been written for the 2027 examinations. If you are reading this at a later date, the eligibility criteria, fees, examination centres, dates and other details may have changed. Always verify the latest information from the official IP India website before applying.

Patent Agent Examination
#

To become a Patent Agent, you must:

  • Be an Indian citizen;
  • Be at least 21 years old; and
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering or Technology from a recognised university, or an equivalent qualification.

This means candidates from backgrounds such as B.Sc., B.Tech., B.E., B.Pharm., B.Sc. Agriculture and other qualifying science, engineering or technology degrees may apply, subject to their degree satisfying Section 126 of the Patents Act, 1970.

DetailInformation
Examination fee₹1,600
Examination date10 January 2027
EligibilityBachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering or Technology
Pass criteriaMinimum 50% marks separately in each written paper
Annual continuation fee₹800 per year (due on 1 April each year to remain on the Register of Patent Agents)

⛔ NOT ELIGIBLE IF YOU HOLD A BA, B.Com., BBA OR OTHER NON-SCIENCE DEGREE

If your undergraduate degree is not in Science, Engineering or Technology — for example, if you hold a BA, B.Com., BBA, BA LLB, or any other arts, commerce or humanities degree — you are not eligible for the Patent Agent Examination. This is a statutory requirement under the Patents Act and there is no exception.

However, you are eligible for the Trade Marks Agent Examination, which is open to graduates from all streams. Jump to the Trade Marks Agent Examination section →

Trade Marks Agent Examination
#

For the Trade Marks Agent Examination, the eligibility requirement is broader — a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university is sufficient.

This means graduates from BBA, B.Com., BA, B.Sc., B.Tech., Agriculture and other degree backgrounds may apply, provided they satisfy Rule 144 of the Trade Marks Rules, 2017.

DetailInformation
Examination fee₹4,500
Examination date9 January 2027
EligibilityAny bachelor’s degree from a recognised university
Pass criteriaMinimum 50% marks separately in each written paper
Continuation feePayable on a five-year cycle (under Rule 156 of the Trade Marks Rules, 2017) to remain on the Register of Trade Marks Agents

Key Point: Candidates without a science, engineering or technology degree cannot apply for the Patent Agent Examination, but they can apply for the Trade Marks Agent Examination. If you hold a BA, BBA, B.Com., or similar degree, the Trade Marks Agent Examination is your entry point into the IP profession.

Can You Write Both Examinations?
#

Yes. A candidate possessing the necessary science, engineering or technology qualification may apply for and write both examinations, since they are being conducted on different dates — the Trade Marks Agent Examination on 9 January 2027 and the Patent Agent Examination on 10 January 2027.

The total examination fee for writing both examinations will be ₹6,100 (₹1,600 + ₹4,500), excluding any applicable payment-gateway charges.

If you are eligible for both, I would strongly recommend writing both. The incremental effort is small, and you significantly expand the scope of your professional practice.

Examination Centre: What AP & TG Candidates Must Know
#

Hyderabad is the only examination centre available for candidates from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. There is no centre in Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, or any other city in AP.

The examinations will be conducted in 15 cities across India: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune and Thiruvananthapuram.

Important: Once the application is finally submitted, a request for changing the examination centre will not be entertained. If you are from AP, plan for travel to Hyderabad accordingly. For those already in Hyderabad, this is one less thing to worry about.

Viva Voce: Be Prepared to Travel
#

Candidates who obtain at least 50% marks separately in each written paper will be eligible to appear for the viva voce.

The viva voce will be conducted physically. However, the Government has not yet announced the viva dates, individual schedule, or locations. These details will be published only after the written examination results.

Here is the reality that AP and Telangana candidates must prepare for: no city in AP or Telangana has been listed as a viva voce centre. The viva centres have typically been limited to a few cities such as Delhi, Nagpur, and possibly three others. This is unfortunate but it is how it is. We only need to go there once, though.

This means that even if you write the examination in Hyderabad, you should be prepared to travel to Delhi or another city for the viva voce. Budget for this in advance — travel, accommodation, and at least a day or two away from home or work.

This is not a reason to not apply. It is simply something you should know and plan for from the beginning.

Why Should You Consider These Examinations?
#

This is where I want to speak directly to candidates from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The Field is Growing Fast
#

Intellectual Property is a specialised and fast-growing professional field covering patents, trademarks, designs, geographical indications, brand protection, technology, innovation and commercialisation.

The Government of India is pushing heavily for more IP to be filed across the country. National policy, startup ecosystems, and institutional incentives are all driving demand for IP professionals. Universities, in particular, are being asked to increase their IP filings because institutional rankings — including NIRF — now consider IP output as a factor.

This creates a direct and growing need for professionals who can handle IP registration, prosecution, drafting, portfolio management and advisory work.

The Future Belongs to IP
#

Here is a broader reality that most people are not thinking about yet. As manufacturing becomes increasingly commoditised — where almost anyone, anywhere can produce almost anything — the real competitive advantage shifts away from the factory floor and towards the intellectual property itself. The power lies not in who can make something, but in who owns the rights to make it. Patents, trademarks, designs and trade secrets become the moats that protect businesses.

This global shift means that the demand for IP professionals is not a temporary trend. It is structural. Being in the IP field positions you at the centre of where economic power is consolidating.

Business Comes to You
#

This is one of the most compelling aspects of becoming a Patent Agent or Trade Marks Agent.

Unlike many professions where you need to actively find clients and market yourself, the number of registered Patent Agents and Trade Marks Agents in India is still very limited. Once you are registered, your name is listed on the official IP India website, and people — inventors, companies, startups, law firms, universities — can find you and reach out to you directly.

In other words, this is a profession where business comes to you, rather than you having to chase it. The supply of qualified agents is far lower than the demand, especially outside the major metros.

Especially Suitable for Women Professionals
#

This aspect deserves a specific mention. The IP profession is particularly well-suited for women, including those who may have other personal or family obligations that make it difficult to pursue a traditional 9-to-6 job or build a practice from scratch.

Because the number of registered agents is limited and their names are publicly listed on the IP India website, inbound work opportunities come to you. Clients, companies and law firms actively seek out registered agents from the official rolls. You will get inbound offers for employment.

The work itself — drafting patent specifications, filing trademark applications, advising on IP strategy — can often be done from home or any location with an internet connection. This makes it one of the more flexible professional fields available today. Any challenges will have to be represented in-person though.

Telugu Professionals Are Underrepresented
#

The number of registered Patent Agents and Trade Marks Agents from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana is disproportionately low compared to the economic and academic potential of these states. This is both a gap and an opportunity. There is significant room for Telugu professionals to establish themselves in this field, particularly in Hyderabad, which is a major technology, pharma, and innovation hub.

The appetite for legal careers among Telugu students is clearly there — over 85,000 Telugu students wrote LAWCET in 2024, and that number keeps growing. The IP profession is one of the highest-leverage places for that talent to land.

Multiple Career Paths
#

Qualifying as a Patent Agent or Trade Marks Agent can create opportunities in:

  • IP law firms — working on patent drafting, prosecution, and trademark filings
  • Companies and corporates — managing in-house IP portfolios
  • Pharmaceutical companies — the pharma sector is one of the largest generators of patent work in India, and this is where the Telugu states have a genuine home advantage. Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Aurobindo Pharma, Divi’s Laboratories, Bharat Biotech, MSN Laboratories, Hetero, Laurus Labs and Natco Pharma are all headquartered in Hyderabad, and all of them file patents at scale. They need in-house IP talent — patent drafting, freedom-to-operate analysis, patent landscaping and regulatory IP work — and a Patent Agent qualification is often the deciding credential. Add the generic drug manufacturers, CROs and biotech firms in the same Telangana/AP cluster, and the demand is significant
  • Startups — advising on IP strategy and protection
  • Research institutions and universities — handling technology transfer and IP commercialisation
  • Government employment — the Indian Patent Office and the Trade Marks Registry regularly recruit qualified Patent Agents and Trade Marks Agents for various positions, including Examiners of Patents and Designs, and other IP-related roles within the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM); qualifying as an agent makes you eligible for these government positions
  • Independent professional practice — running your own practice as a registered agent

Additionally, a registered Trade Marks Agent may also practise as a Geographical Indications Agent, subject to the applicable legal provisions. Given the rich GI potential in AP and Telangana — think Tirupati Laddu, Pochampally Ikat, Banganapalle Mangoes, Kondapalli Toys and many more (see my full list of GIs from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana) — this is an additional dimension of professional work.

How to Apply
#

Applications must be submitted online through the official IP India website.

Payment Tip: The IP India website can be a bit wonky at times. It is stupid and requires you to wait 60 mins to check payment status. When making the payment, prefer UPI to avoid any additional service charges. If you pay by credit card, debit card or net banking, the payment gateway may charge an additional processing fee over and above the examination fee. UPI payments do not attract these extra charges. If you start the payment process, finish it immediately, if it gets stuck somewhere, it is gone.

Exam Structure
#

Both examinations follow the same broad pattern: two written papers followed by a viva voce for those who clear the written stage.

The application window is open right now, and it will close on 30 September 2026. If you are even remotely interested in the field of Intellectual Property, do not wait until the last week. Apply early, start preparing, and give yourself a fair shot.

The IP profession is one of those rare fields where the demand for professionals substantially exceeds the supply, especially in states like Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Whether you are a fresh graduate, a working professional looking for a career pivot, a woman looking for flexible professional opportunities, or someone in pharma or tech who wants to add a powerful credential — this is your opportunity to get in.

If you have questions about the examination, preparation, or the profession, feel free to reach out.
