One of my most frustrating complaints with the Postal Department has always been this: most post offices stop accepting Speed Post bookings far too early in the day.

In many sub-post offices, Speed Post booking closes around 3:00 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. Some head post offices keep the counter open till around 6:00 p.m. But for many of us, especially advocates, law offices, professionals, businesses, and people who work with deadlines, that timing is simply not enough.

Very often, the real work gets completed only in the evening. Drafts are finalised late. Documents are signed late. Clients respond late. Court-related papers, notices, replies, applications, and important parcels often become ready only after normal office hours.

A Quick Rant on the “Next Dispatch” Excuse

One thing that makes this even more frustrating is that the issue is not always about urgency.

Sometimes, I am perfectly okay with the article going in the next dispatch. I am not asking the Postal Department to send it immediately. I am not asking them to process it out of turn. I only want to hand over the Speed Post article, get it booked, and let it move whenever the next scheduled dispatch takes place. Just so I can avoid the hassle of running to the post office the next day.

But even that is often not accepted.

In many post offices, once the booking time is over, they simply refuse to accept the article. When I ask them to take the cover or parcel and process it in the next available dispatch, they cite some postal rule saying that they cannot accept and keep booked articles in the post office after the cut-off time.

I do not know yet whether this is an actual postal rule or merely a convenient explanation used to avoid accepting documents and parcels after a particular time. This is something I intend to look into separately, perhaps through another RTI or by examining the relevant postal manuals and departmental instructions.

But as a user, the practical problem is very clear: even when I am not insisting on immediate dispatch, I am still denied the ability to book the article after counter hours. That is what makes 24/7 postal counters so valuable. They are not just useful for urgent late-night dispatches. They are also useful for people who simply want the certainty of having their article booked, receipted, and entered into the postal system without waiting for the next working day.

At that point, what we really need is a reliable place where we can book Speed Post late in the night — even after 9:00 p.m., sometimes between 9:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. — and still have the article move quickly through the postal system.

Many years ago, I came to know about one such almost-secret counter at Begumpet Airport Post Office in Hyderabad. I was told that this counter accepts Speed Post and Registered Post (now deprecated) articles 24/7. At first, I was honestly surprised. It was almost shocking to know that a government department was actually running a round-the-clock postal booking counter.

Later, I started using it myself.

Booking Speed Post at Midnight in Hyderabad
A citizen booking a Speed Post at the 24x7 Special Postal Counter in Begumpet, Hyderabad.

The facility at Begumpet Airport Post Office, referred to as SPC, has been extremely useful for me. I have been using this service for nearly 7–8 years now.

These days, I usually go there after 10:30 p.m. Sometimes, I go even later, around 11:30 p.m., depending on when the work gets completed. In the past, when I was unmarried and had no curfew restrictions at home, I have even gone there around 1:00 a.m. to book Speed Post articles.

That is the real value of a 24/7 postal counter. It does not force your legal work, office work, or documentation work to fit into a 3:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. postal deadline. If the document is ready late, you can still go, book it, get the receipt, and move on.

Many times, I have gone there late in the night, booked my Speed Post articles, and finished my work without stress. Sometimes there is a small rush, but most of the time, the counter is free and the process is smooth.

For advocates and others who deal with urgent documents, this kind of facility is a genuine blessing. It gives us one more working window after the usual postal timings are over.

This made me curious: how many such 24/7 postal booking facilities actually exist in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana?

To find out, I filed an RTI application with the Department of Posts. Instead of giving one consolidated reply from a single office, the Public Information Officer, who was perhaps feeling adventurous, transferred the RTI to several postal divisions and circles across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Eventually, I received replies from most of them.

I have gone through those RTI replies and collated the important information in one place.

In this article, I am listing the post offices and postal counters in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana where 24-hour postal services are available, particularly for booking Speed Post articles. This is especially useful for advocates, professionals, businesses, students, and anyone who needs to send important documents after regular post office working hours.

Good News: After the recent APT 2.0 rollout across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, UPI payments are now accepted at all locations. You do not need to carry exact cash at midnight anymore!

Sometimes, one office can’t do it all, so they tag-team. Here are the AP facilities providing round-the-clock coverage, often by combining a Head Post Office (H.O.) with a Railway Mail Service (RMS) counter.

Almost There: Proposals Under Consideration
#

Not every district has achieved 24x7 status yet, but some are trying. In Srikakulam, a proposal is currently under consideration to create an arrangement between the Srikakulam Road RMS Counter and Amadalavalasa H.O..

However, this is not an active facility yet, so don’t show up at 2 AM expecting the doors to be open.

What’s Next?

This is an ongoing investigation. A final, consolidated response from all remaining regions is still awaited. Once all PIOs provide their data, I will update this post with a comprehensive and final list.

Until then, if you find yourself needing to post a letter at 2 AM in Hyderabad or Tirupati, you now know exactly where to go!
